RRU in Centralized Radio Access Network

C-RAN is a network technology used for effective communication with a centralized information processing carried out remotely within the cloud system. The signal is processed at a remote location and the base stations are connected with efficient fiber optic connections. It is highly efficient and leads to several advantages in system implementation and maintenance. 

Remote Radio Unit (RRU) acts as a transceiver to the mobile devices. RRU is basically an antenna array arranged in different directions to cover large area surrounding the cell tower.

RRU in C-RAN

Several 5G RRU use cases are detailled below. Note, that Metanoia SoCs MT2812 and MT2814 can be used for Baseband processing and MT3812 can be used as a RF Transceiver.

  • The occupied BW is typically 100 MHz comprising one or more 5G TDD component carriers
  • The data converters on the baseband SoC operate at 245.76 Msps and support two TX and two RX IQ streams
  • DPD in the RU system can be supported to achieve power and performance requirements
  • Multiple TX paths are periodically observed to track variations across temperature and environment changes

  • The occupied BW is typically 200 MHz comprising 2x 100 MHz 5G TDD component carriers
  • The data converters on the baseband SoC support one TX and one RX IQ stream
  • DPD is not used in such wideband deployments
  • Two baseband chips are connected to a single baseband SoC
  • RX signal levels for AGC are shared and the TX/RX interval timing is synchronized precisely between the two baseband SoC parts
